D7: Believe The Hype

Today’s post is going to be a quick one. It’s Sunday, by the way. And today was the women’s snowboard slopetyle final. What a great debut. I have to admit I got a bit emotional watching Torah drop in for her first run, and watching Jamie handle the pressure and win. It was a good day for women’s snowboarding.

My story on Jamie and Torah and the women of slopestyle snowboarding is HERE.

GMAAfter slope, I went over to the halfpipe to watch practice for the first time. Both the men and women were riding, and few were doing anything of note. Mostly, they were complaining. The pipe, not surprisingly, is subpar to say the least. After the first day of practice, the riders said it was narrow, there is very little flat bottom and way too much vert. That was still true today. The weather is also an issue. It is warm and getting warmer.

I left around 7 and later heard from some guys that they called practice and cancelled tomorrow morning’s practice. They were supposed to do a lot more work before tonight, but had to stop because of aerials. (The halfpipe, aerials jump and moguls course are right next to each other and share a finish area.) The next practice is Monday night. We’ll see. It’s not going to be an X Games pipe. We knew that, but I think it’s a bit of a shock, especially to the first-time Olympians, just how bad it is.
