D2: Banding Together

This weekend, I’m in Austin – one of my favorite U.S. cities and home to the 2014 summer X Games – for the Austin City Limits music festival. (Thanks to Brittany, of course!) This is my second year, so I feel like a total pro. I know where to find the best tacos, free drinks  and the fancy, air-conditioned bathrooms. What more could a girl want? Today was day one and we dove in head first.

Our fearless leader, Brittany …

Tricia, Cairo and I spent the early part of the day discovering new bands. A few favorites:

We loved Desert Noise from Utah. Cool guys we got to meet later in the day and decided we liked even more.

Shovels & Rope

Savages

Then we danced to Fun., reconnected with Pinback and stood on stage for Jake Bugg. (LOVE love love “Lightning Bolt,” the song we walked down the aisle to at Jenni & Sean’s wedding in June. He’s being heralded as the new Bob Dylan. Not sure that’s how I’d label him or if I’d go that far. He’s still a teenager, for goodness sake. But he’s fantastic and fun and chameleon-like. And speaks in a cute British accent. The teen girls swoon.

But tonight was awesome and strangely inspiring. I know it made me want to take a yoga class in the morning. The guys from Depeche Mode killed it. The production was incredible and we were all blown away at how physical their show still is and how fantastic they sound. Dave Gahan is such a damn rock star. And how can you not have fun when the band you’re watching clearly still loves the hell out of what they’re doing on stage? And shows videos of cute puppies behind them as they sing?!

The dogvision theatrics were pretty epic, minus the one obvious fail: not a beagle or weena dog to be found.

More Depeche Mode magic.

Such a fun, fun Fun. day. I can’t wait for tomorrow. And come to think of it, I think we will take that yoga class in the morning.
