Gilmore’s the Girl

I have the opportunity to meet many amazing people in the course of doing my job. And I take very seriously the fact that these people trust me with telling their stories. I like to joke that my Superpower is the ability to write one story and–presto!–pass their stories along to millions of readers.

I’ve never felt such a responsibility as I did a few weeks ago, when I met up with four-time world surfing champion Steph Gilmore while she was here in Los Angeles.

Ladies, All the Ladies

This week, the ASP women’s surf tour is in New South Wales for the Beachley Classic this week, and once again the teens are dominating the event. Last week, my ESPN.com column focused on five of the under-20 women who are upping the game in women’s surfing. Check it out HERE.

Also last week, a commercial began airing on several networks, including ESPN, during the NBA playoffs. It’s an ad for energy drink company Red Bull and the first from the company to feature a female athlete–motocross champ Ashley Fiolek. For this week’s column, I talked to Ashley (via email) about the experience. Check it out HERE.

Someone’s Gotta Do It

When people ask me why I choose to cover action sports, I should simply show them photos from my most recent reporting trip. (And then ask them to recall the football games taking place the same day. Minnesota roof collapse, anyone?) Each November/December, the ASP World Surfing Tour heads to the North Shore of Oahu for its final events. The final stop on the men’s–and for the first time ever, the women’s–tour is the Pipeline Masters, a 40-year-old event that takes place on one of the most famous and most dangerous waves in the world.

The North Shore: Surfing With Carissa

Friday morning, my last day in Oahu, and I am sad to leave. I’m re-thinking re-thinking that satellite office now. I got up this morning at 4:30, checked out and headed to Honolulu to meet up with Carissa Moore (the reason I’m here) and her family for their morning surf session. On the way over, I wonder when was the last time she woke up after the sun. (She tells me she can’t remember.)

When I arrive, her dad Chris tells me the surf is bad, so the morning session is off. Instead, I hang out and chat with the family before school. Carissa has a younger sister and two younger step-sisters. They’re all sleepy, but chatty. After breakfast, we drop Carissa off at school, tour the campus (yes, her high school has a campus) and drive around Honolulu. After school, I get my Wish moment. We’re going surfing.
