Just Dance!

Monday night, I did something I’ve wanted to do for years, something completely frivolous and silly that I’ve been wanting to check off my bucket list but hadn’t found the time to fit into my schedule. I went to a taping of Dancing With the Stars. (With a Terrible Towel in my purse!)

My friend Kristi, who is also from Pittsburgh and a huge Steelers fan, drove down from Mammoth for the show, and got us awesome seats inside the theater. (Normally, as media, I would sit in a back room, watch the show on a monitor and then hit the press line. Not Monday! We needed to wave our towels–with total journalistic impartiality, of course–for our favorite WR!)

Bringing the Joy!

Until Super Bowl weekend, I never knew how much I loved the name Joy.

I’ve always known I liked it … I mean, it’s my mother’s name and my sister’s middle name. It was also my great aunt’s name, for whom both of them are named. I’ve always liked that it has meaning beyond just a name, and that it evokes warm, fluffy feelings in the the same way names like Hope or Grace or Faith make you smile without realizing you’re doing it. But there’s something even more special about the name Joy. I think it’s simple. Joy means happiness. For my mother, introducing herself is like walking up to a new person and saying, “Hi, I’m happiness! Nice to meet you.” The response is incredible. But I never fully appreciated it before last weekend.

A Black-and-Gold Weekend

It’s been a few days since my trip to Pittsburgh, so I’m writing this entry post-trip. But I couldn’t let a weekend like that slip away without a posting. So, in the sake of saving time, here are 8 reasons I’m still thinking about Steel City …

8. They call it the City of Bridges for a reason. Driving through downtown is like cruising around in a lifesize erector set. “I can see the stadium! … I can see the stadium! … Oh … on the other side of that river and bridge and bridge and …”

Separation of Church and State Universities

This past weekend, I stayed in New York and my mom went on the road. Actually, I stayed in NY because my mom went on the road … she flew up here for a visit. While we were watching the UF-Auburn game at a bar with some friends (and again later at the Giants-Eagles game), I got to thinking about sports rivalries.
