Hello 2009!! Cruisin’ Cuzzins … Berra Skates Wrigley … New Year’s, No Limits. No Kidding.
After nearly three weeks away from Los Angeles, my holiday sabbatical is over and I’m back on the west coast—but not for long. January’s a busy multi-sports month. Next Wednesday, I head to Miami for the BCS title game. (My co-workers have informed me that, along with no cheering in the press box, there is a new Alyssa Rule that includes a ban on handsprings and orange-and-blue socks.) Then it’s off to Park City for snowboarding and the Sundance film festival. And finally, the month wraps up in Aspen for the Winter X Games. February had better start working out. It’s going to have a tough time following the first month of 2009.

Guest Blog: Lindsay Laces Up at Wrigley
Dear Alyssa’s Blog:
I skated at Wrigley today!
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, the NHL is having its third Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. It’s an outdoor hockey game, this year between the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field. E.J. Hradek – my fellow ESPN Mag hockey scribe – and I arrived in the Windy City this morning, checked in to our respective hotels and took the Red Line out to Addison Street. We ducked into Gate K, took the first tunnel up to take a look and, well, wow. They’ve parked a sheet of ice right on top of Ernie Banks’ office, stretched across the middle infield with Wrigley’s ivy-covered walls and big green scoreboard in the background. The NHL has even covered the outside dasher boards with aesthetically pleasing faux-Wrigley brick.

New Feature! The B Blog
Welcome to my newest blog-in-a-blog, which will be a regular feature here on AR.com. What’s the B stand for, you ask? Well, a couple of things. Blondes (Lindsay Berra and me) and Bikes (the pedal variety). For the next year, Lindsay and I are training to ride from NYC to San Francisco. Throughout that time, will chronicle our journey here, as well as on espnthemag.com down the road (pun intended).
Initially, the idea to turn ourselves into badass (another B!) cyclists was born of necessity. I had back surgery; Lindsay had hip surgery and with each, our running careers disappeared. We started riding, as most people do, as a way to reclaim the thrill of a long run without the wear and tear on our bodies. Once we started riding, we needed a challenge. This was what we came up with.
Knowing it would be tough to take three months off work for a cross-country ride, we pitched the idea of combining the ride with our work, a feature we are tentatively calling Blonde Sportswriters Bike America. (Better suggestions for our tour name are warmly welcomed.)
The NFL is a Head Case
Originally, this weekend’s blog was meant to be light and fluffy. I’d start with a few Halloween costume ideas I gathered at a Friday-night party, (my two friends were a bug and a bee; I was the Orkin girl; also: bee/bee keeper, Tom Coughlin/Eli Manning; Mario/Luigi; light socket/plug) and then recount my it’d-be-hard-to-recreate-this-again Sunday-night experience watching the Sox sweep the Series with my Red Sox friend Tori and Yankees friend Lindsay … and a room full of ardent Yankees fans. We attended the annual Watch a World Series Game with Lindsay’s Grandpa night at the Yogi Berra museum at Montclair State University.
But Sunday afternoon, I went to the Jets-Bills game. And then I got mad. So I ditched light and fluffy …
